Not a lot of frills, but excellent food at reasonable prices. Put that together with a good selection of bottled beer and other drinks, and you have a pleasant neighborhood place to eat.

Great enchiladas enmoladas and micheladas.
Very friendly service and lots of seating and parking. It was busy and we were well attended. -

Interior of the place is small but decorated very festively. El Zarape is cheap so it is nice to stop by here when you are hungry and do not want to break the bank. However, you do get what you pay for. Service is slow and needs improvement. When my guest and I were seated, we were brought complimentary chips and salsa. We were not brought any water, and drink orders were not taken. The salsa was very thin and watery while the chips tasted stale. Despite there only being one other table, it took over five minutes for the waitress to return to take our order. We both ordered large horchatas which tasted watery and were disappointing. Next, we ordered two tacos, chicken enchiladas, and a caramel flan. It took almost 20 minutes for our entire order to come out. The steak taco was amazing, but the chorizo taco lacked flavor and was disappointing. Order their steak tacos. They are tasty and cheap. Ask for their tomatillo sauce and green salsa. The green salsa was mild and had a good flavor. The tomatillo sauce was just extra spicy without having any flavor. The enchiladas were not good, and neither was the rice or beans that accompanied it. The texture of the rice was off and the beans were very pasty. I attempted to order more items but they were out of quite a few entrees. I ordered an additional two al pastor tacos and they came out fairly quickly. They tasted okay. The flan was the worst part of the meal. It was barely sweet, unusual texture, and it just tasted weird. El Zarape is a nice restaurant for cheap tacos and a quick bite, but there are better Peoria options available.
